HD Audio
HD Audio was supposed to do for sound what HD TV did for video. (Not to be confused with Intel’s technology of the same name for PCs.) HDA was trademarked as “a patented, sophisticated, electronic, acoustic analog technology that is used for correcting binaural correlation of stereo audio signals”. Whew!
This audio recording and reproduction system purported to overcome previous restrictions by continuously correcting the phase of signal as a function of frequency. The promise was “two dimensional stereo with the added dimensions of depth and height”.
Although this consumer version was sold at the same time, more elaborate units had to be leased for broadcast and for live performances. All models had binaural features for directional sound. Never took off.
